Bomb Calorimeter

Bomb Calorimeter

A bomb calorimeter is a laboratory instrument used to measure the calorific value (heat of combustion) of solid and liquid fuels such as coal, coke, petroleum products, and food samples. A weighed sample is burned inside a sealed, oxygen-filled steel vessel — the "bomb" — and the heat released is calculated from the rise in temperature of the surrounding water jacket.

The instrument delivers accurate and reliable results in compliance with IS 1350 and ASTM D240 standards, making it suitable for laboratory, industrial, and research applications. It is widely used by power plants, coal mines, cement industries, food testing labs, and quality control departments to determine fuel efficiency and energy content.

Why Bomb Calorimeter Testing Matters

Calorific value is one of the most critical parameters in fuel quality assessment. It directly determines pricing, combustion efficiency, and suitability for a given industrial application — whether it's coal for a thermal power plant or a packaged food product being tested for its nutritional energy value.

A bomb calorimeter gives a direct, empirical measurement rather than an estimate, which is why it remains the reference method specified in national and international testing standards. Regular calibration with a benzoic acid standard sample ensures the instrument stays within its rated accuracy over years of use.

Product Range

Isoperibol Series

2 Models Available
In the isoperibol method, the jacket surrounding the bucket is held at a constant temperature while only the bucket temperature is tracked during the test. This gives fast, stable readings and is the basis for our fully automatic IP series, built for labs that need consistent throughput with minimal manual handling.
